Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone with Waylon Wyatt

There’s something refreshing about stepping outside of your normal lane creatively, and for me, that was photographing and experiencing Waylon Wyatt live at El Club in Detroit. Country concerts usually aren’t my go-to, but Wyatt made it easy to get pulled into the atmosphere.

Now don’t get me wrong; do I regularly listen to country music? No.
Am I from the South? Duh.
Do I enjoy country music? Yes.
Was Rascal Flatts one of the first groups that I listened to on when I first got Spotify? Maybe.

The night started off pretty rocky, as there was a confrontation between some audience members during the opener, MEELS, but between his storytelling, laid-back stage presence, and genuine connection with the crowd, the night felt less like a performance and more like a room full of people hanging out with an old friend.

He carried a charm that kept the audience engaged from start to finish, balancing humor, humility, and strong live vocals effortlessly.

What stood out most was how naturally he commanded the room without overdoing it. Wyatt has a slick confidence that never overshadowed the music, but enhanced in a way to draw the audience inward. Whether you came in as a longtime fan or someone like me who was simply curious, there was something undeniably entertaining and warmly inviting about the entire experience. Sometimes the best shows are the ones you never expected to enjoy as much as you did.
